So it's week two or three of the semester and you are still trying to pronounce your new students name and differentiate Elijah A from Elijah J, how can you possibly connect with 150 students in two weeks? My answer is digital storytelling as a preliminary first project. For this project students complete a Who Am I worksheet (Mr. Myers Blog) in which they answer questions about themselves, then on the back I have a script template for the required component where they have to record themselves saying;
- "My name is....."
- "I am in the grade here at El Cap"
- "I will graduate high school in...(7th 2023, 8th 2022)
- "My Greatest Accomplishment is...."
- "And now here are some of my favorite things...."
*With the rise of Snapchat everywhere I decided to get more student buy-in by letting them record themselves using Snapchat filters (as long as it is school appropriate) save it to their Camera Roll then upload to Google drive to then upload to WeVideo. Here is an example
From here students will need to find images of their
Favorite Food 5 pts each
Favorite Color 5 pts each
3 Favorite Hobbies 5 pts each
Favorite Type of Music/Musician/Band 5 pts each
Favorite TV show/Movie 5 pts each
Before this first major project, we had a two-week unit on copyright and crediting sources based on Common Sense Media Digital Citizen Curriculum, so the students would be ready for upcoming projects. This project is a great way to learn about your students and their interests.
